4th November 2008. VULCAN CD shipping delay.
Having been made aware by a few UK based friends that they had not received their order as yet, whether placed directly with Esoteric or via online retailers such as Amazon, HMV etc., I had another reason to contact Esoteric anyway and also asked if there was a delay in distribution.  They have replied and told me to feel free to let anyone know, that there has been a delay of just over a week from the release date and that shipping to retail suppliers and mail order purchases will commence from today.  Retailers who were advising “out of stock” or “ on order with suppliers” should be receiving their stock shortly. Hope this helps. Eddie

16th September 2008. A message from Paul Minkkinen - Editor of The Coloured Rain Magazine.

Due to a number of private personal matters including a very recent close family bereavement, issue 40 of CR will be delayed for a while.  I am also awaiting approval of the wording on 2 interviews I conducted with Jose Neto which covers the in depth recording process for 9 Lives, news of Jose's forthcoming solo album and a few other subjects. The other is the 2nd part of my interview with Aninha Capaldi which may be added to when I meet with her shortly. This covers many factors of Jim’s life beyond  music, which I believe you will find of great interest.
As always there will be a number of features from our regular contributors together with reviews and so much more. Thanks for your patience as always.  It is coming. Paul.

8th September 2008.  CHRIS WOOD’s VULCAN ALBUM.
Press release from Esoteric Recordings record label:
“October will see the release of an album which has been many months in  preparation, Chris Wood’s Vulcan album. I’m sure some of you will be aware of Chris’s work as a member of the legendary band Traffic. Vulcan is  essentially the lost solo album recorded by Chris following the demise  of Traffic in 1974. The idea for Vulcan was formulated prior to Traffic’s final tour and the record was assembled slowly over the next few years with  contributions from Steve Winwood and members of The Wailers. Sadly Chris never saw the album completed and following his untimely passing in 1983 the tapes remained in the possession of his family. Now, thanks to the full  involvement and assistance of Chris’s sister Stephanie and long-time Traffic fan  Dan Ropek, Vulcan has been assembled and sees the light of day this Autumn. It is a project which all of us at Esoteric feel honoured to have been a  part of.”

2nd July 2008. Steve
continues his concerted blitz on the media following the release of NINE LIVES with a 5 page spread entitled “Drawn from memory” in the August Edition of MOJO Magazine, out today.  This follows on from a full page spread published in last Fridays The SUN newspaper (the biggest selling daily newspaper in the UK). The SUN described Nine Lives as being “Terrific!”  Let’s hope he picks up more sales on the back of his media efforts.

9th June 2008.
Word in from Howard K who took in Steve’s appearance at the Wachovia centre in Philadelphia on June 8th
Here is what I can remember of how the setlist went- I could be missing a 9 lives song.
1. Secrets, 2. I'm A Man 3. Hungry Man, 4. Can't Find My Way Home, 5. Dear Mr. Fantasy, 6. At Times We Do Forget,
7. Higher Love, 8. Dirty City. I think he was on around 8:02 to around 9:11. I think he might have done Fly in there.-However, the best part was when he did Gimme Some Lovin’ in the middle of Tom Petty's set.”

7th June 2008. The July edition of Record Collector Magazine here in the UK has a six page spread on Steve.  This is perhaps one of the best interviews in print as part of his Nine Lives promotional stint (Paul and I think) in that he is very candid about his past relationships with Record Companies.  It’s a very interesting read. Recommended.

28th May 2008. I read today of the passing of Jimmy McGriff - one of the so called “Big Three” of Hammond B-3 Organ practitioners who together with Jimmy Smith and Richard “Groove” Holmes were the most highly respected and influential Jazz and Blues Organists of their time.

27th May 2008. The July 2008 edition of UNCUT Magazine (with CSNY on front cover) features a 3 page long (inc photographs) article entitled “An Audience with Steve Winwood”. Price £4.30 at UK retailers.

20th May 2008. LAST NIGHT - AT THE SCALA. Steve and his band took the stage last night for a one off London gig before his lengthy tour of the USA supporting Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.  A venue that I’ve not been to before. From the outside the building looked as though it might once had been an Opera House and was perhaps one time an English equivalent of La Scala Opera House in Milan. I don’t know. ......................................

15th May 2008. Yes, we are still here.  There’s been a lot of reviews and news recently on “Nine Lives” but it’s been shown in many places in particular on stevewinwood.com and youtube.com and there’s not much point in us duplicating that here. I’m sure you’ve seen it. But here’s something that regular CR contributor Steve Milner spotted which he has called and I quote “Winwood Promo Radio Thingy” which I think is as good a title for it as anything around, don’t you?  It’s a link to a 75 minute radio programme special in Stereo where Steve talks about Nine Lives and his career and also features Eric Clapton talking about the recent collaboration. To hear live streaming of this, then link to:

Looks like Nine Lives will not be available outside the USA until 5/5/08.  However HMV.com and Play.com are advertising a version with a bonus DVD. Also available as of 22 April is a double Vinyl release, known to be available through Amazon.com (in the USA).  Amazon Japan indicate that there is also a CD / DVD  version, but there is no other information to substantiate this. Plus there are a number of youtube.com items which you can search for just by typing in the names.  How long they will be there for is anyone’s guess.  We understand that the set list for the second night differed thus: Cocaine replaced Dear Mr Fantasy as the last song in the set and Dear Mr Fantasy became the encore in place of Crossroads.  Here are the links:

www.wolfgangsvault.com/ have today released a TRAFFIC concert recorded at The Paris Theatre in London on April 30th 1970. This concert was first broadcast on BBC Radio 1’s “In Concert” programme and features TRAFFIC unveiling their then soon to be released “John Barleycorn Must Die” album.  With commentary between songs by the legendary John Peel.  Unfortunately “No Time to Live” is missing from this recording, which although it was broadcast at the time, a recording problem caused its omission. Coloured Rain Magazine featured a fairly extensive article on the TRAFFIC BBC Sessions back in Issue 30 Autumn 2000 which is worth checking out too. In fact I’ll add the article from our archive sometime in the future to our Articles Section.  If you have never heard this concert before then access Wolfgangs Concert Vault for a legendary show.

Steve Winwood - Press Release
LEGENDARY  SUPERSTAR STEVE WINWOOD
SIGNS WITH COLUMBIA  RECORDS

Highly-Anticipated New Album, "Nine Lives,"
Slated For Release On Tuesday, April 8

(dateline - New York - January 22, 2008; source: Columbia Records)

The legendary  singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist Steve Winwood has signed a new deal with Columbia Records who will release the artist's highly-anticipated new  major label album, "Nine Lives," on Tuesday, April 8.

The eagerly-awaited  "Nine Lives" is Winwood's first full-length studio album since the artist released "About Time" on his own independent label, Wincraft, in 2003 and opens  an important new chapter in Steve's extraordinary career.

Each of the  nine tracks on the aptly-titled "Nine Lives" paints a musical portrait of spiritual transformation as Winwood continues the exploration of soul, rock,  blues and world music which began in 1957, when, at the age of 9, he played guitar in his father's band in Birmingham, England.

Songs on "Nine Lives"  include "I'm Not Drowning," "Fly," "Raging Sea," "Dirty City," "We're All Looking," "Hungry Man," "Secrets," "At Times We Do Forget," and "Other Shore."  Additionally, fellow musical legend Eric Clapton lends guitar work to "Dirty  City."

News of Steve Winwood's "Nine Lives" comes in the wake of a  transcendent live collaboration between Winwood and his erstwhile Blind Faith bandmate Eric Clapton at the Chicago Crossroads Guitar Festival in July 2007.  The pair's staggering on-stage chemistry in Chicago led to the announcement of  three historic Steve Winwood & Eric Clapton concerts at New York's fabled Madison Square Garden, scheduled for February 25, 26 and 28, 2008.  Tickets for all three of Winwood's MSG shows with Clapton sold-out within minutes of their release.

Winwood (who turns 60 this year) was perhaps the youngest member of the original British pop music invasion of the mid-1960s. A prodigious guitarist and keyboard player in the Birmingham R&B scene by his mid-teens, Winwood cut his musical chops as a back-up musician for an  impressive array of American rock & roll and blues pioneers -- including Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf, B.B. King, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley  -- during their UK tours.

In 1962, Steve and his older brother, Muff Winwood, began playing with Spencer Davis and drummer Pete York in The Rhythm  & Blues Quartet, an ensemble which would eventually morph into the Spencer Davis Group. An intensely powerful and emotional vocalist and formidable songwriter, Steve Winwood launched an enormously influential "blue-eyed soul"  movement with hits like "Keep On Runnin'," "Somebody Help Me," and, especially,  the massively successful pop-soul anthem, "Gimme Some Lovin'." Originally released in 1966, "Gimme Some Lovin'" entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1996.  Winwood left the Spencer Davis Group in 1967 to form the groundbreaking jazz-rock ensemble Traffic.

In 1966, as "Gimme Some Lovin' transformed the pop landscape, the 18-year-old Steve Winwood entered into his first  collaboration with Eric Clapton, recording three songs -- "Steppin' Out," "Crossroads," and "I Want To Know" -- as the Powerhouse (a group which also  included future Cream bassist Jack Bruce). Winwood and Clapton would join forces again in 1969 to create Blind Faith, one of pop music's first bona fide  supergroups, with drummer Ginger Baker and bassist Rick Grech.

Following  the break-up of Traffic in 1974 (they would reform and successfully tour in the 1990s), Steve Winwood launched a successful solo career which reached an apogee  in the mid-1980s with the release of four classic albums in a row: "Arc of a  Diver" (1981, platinum); "Talking Back To The Night" (1982); "Back In The High Life" (1986, 3x platinum), which featured the 1 smash, "Higher Love," which  earned Winwood a trio of Grammys including "Record of the Year"; and the 1  Billboard chart-topping "Roll With It" (1988, 2x platinum).
Through his  unparalleled five-plus decades career, Steve Winwood has remained an in-demand  session player, contributing his signature sound to an amazing variety of  projects for artists including

Jimi Hendrix ("Electric Ladyland"), Joe  Cocker ("With A Little Help From My Friends"), Leon Russell ("Leon Russell"), Lou Reed ("Berlin"), George Harrison ("Dark Horse," "George Harrison"), Toots  & the Maytals ("Reggae Got Soul"), Marianne Faithfull ("Dangerous Acquaintances"), David Gilmour ("About Face"), Tina Turner ("Break Every  Rule"), Billy Joel ("The Bridge"), James Brown ("Gravity"), Rosanne Cash  ("King's Record Shop"), Jimmy Buffett ("Hot Water"), Phil Collins ("But Seriously"), Etta James ("Right Time"), Paul Weller ("Stanley Road"), and  Christina Aguilera ("Back To Basics"), among many others.

The private  Steve Winwood is an outdoorsman who loves hiking and walking, and a dedicated family man who spends his Sundays playing the organ and singing in his church  choir.

With "Nine Lives," Steve Winwood opens up his world and gives his  fans, old and new, nine new reasons to celebrate the life and music of this ageless, and still prodigious, musical treasure.

19th January 2008.
The word appears to be that Steve’s next album “Nine Lives” has now been scheduled with a release date of 8th April.  Thanks BT.  www.stevewinwood.com/news.full.php features a forthcoming article in 20th Century Guitar magazine interviewing Steve who talks about his new album and collaboration with Eric Clapton and indeed Eric himself talking about subjects including Blind Faith and working with Steve.

14th December 2007.
BBC Radio London 94.9 FM’s Robert Elms Show today (Friday) at 1pm featured a 30 minute spot on Steve Winwood under the title of “Four For”, a regular feature on chosen artists. Being a regular listener of this Radio Station I quickly alerted locals by text of what was about to happen. Robert Elms invites listeners to phone in or e-mail and name 4 of their favourite songs over Steve’s long career.  Lucky for us Paul got through and gave a great plug to ourselves here at Coloured Rain and gave an excellent summary appraisal of Steve’s career in about 3 minutes flat from beginnings to next years shows with Eric Clapton! A previous caller had selected SDG’s “Keep on Runnin’” together with his recollection. Paul initially would have liked to have Low Spark played, but as he said to Robert, wasn’t sure that the station would have had the time to play the full version in time allowed. Robert said he maybe could have truncated it.  But instead Paul selected “No Face, No Name, No Number”.  Well done Paul and thanks also for the name check!  The next caller selected “Arc of a Diver”.  The final selection Robert based upon the sheer volume of requests that had come through for this slot and the popular choice was indeed “Low Spark”, albeit in a truncated form. The show is usually available to hear again 24 hours later and if it is there , it will be from a point 1 hour forward from the start of show. Check from tomorrow at www.bbc.co.uk/london/radio/ and then select LISTEN AGAIN, find Robert Elms Show and it might be there.  Eddie

26th November 2007

The CROSSROADS GUITAR FESTIVAL 2007 DVD was released in England today and from what I’ve seen and heard so far it’s highly impressive from both filming and sound perspectives.  Not just Steve’s performance but the whole thing. Both filming and sound differ from what was seen on the MSN Webcast and we highly recommend it here at Coloured Rain.

Wolfgangs Vault have a 1988 interview with Jim Capaldi lasting around 14 minutes which can be heard via the following link if you have registered with that site. It only takes a few moments to register. Jim talks about his “Some Come Running” album and collaborations with Steve, George Harrison, Eric Clapton and others.
Go to: www.wolfgangsvault.com/sa/jim-capaldi/8706.html Thanks to Steve Milner for spotting this.

27th November extra. Additionally there is also an interview with Steve Winwood circa 1983 which can be heard via this link concerts.wolfgangsvault.com/dt/steve-winwood-concert/20051352-6795.html Thanks also to Alberto.

21st November 2007. Aninha Capaldi telephoned me today to let me know that this Sunday 25/11, The Sunday Express carries an interesting 4 page feature in its magazine supplement.  Following on from the Dear Mr. Fantasy concert they travelled with Aninha to Brazil to see how the proceeds from the concert, and subsequent DVD/CD sales would be spent.  They show the work in the shelters for Brazilian street children; Aninha also talks about Jim and the tribute concert.  It should make for an interesting read.  Paul M.

5th November 2007.
On Guy Fawkes Night here’s some fireworks that we’ve long been hoping for.  Arguably two of the U.K’s finest musicians, composers and performers of our generation  in STEVE WINWOOD and ERIC CLAPTON reunite for 3 joint concerts at New York’s Madison Square Gardens in February 2008.  winclapgigs_2

Following their two reunion shows earlier this year at The Countryside Rocks and Crossroads Festival, clearly their appetites have been whetted for more of the same. The official press release for this news can be read at
www.stevewinwood.com which also mentions the release of Steve’s new album early in 2008 on Columbia Records.

Blind Faith always seemed like unfinished business in terms of the potential of Steve and Eric working together and let’s hope that this leads to something else of a joint nature in the future.

The Crossroads Festival 2007 DVD has a release date in the UK on November 26th. It’s understood that of the songs that Steve and Eric performed together, all except ‘Pearly Queen’ and possibly ‘Cocaine’ which merged into ‘Crossroads’ (which is on the DVD) during the performance will be on the 2 disc DVD set.

The next edition of the Coloured Rain Magazine which will be a bumper 48 page issue is currently at the printers and should be winging its way to subscribers in the near future.

12th October 2007
In the absence of anything particularly newsworthy recently we can mention that we were present at The Derek Trucks Band gig at The Carling Academy, Islington, London yesterday and happened to notice Mr & Mrs Winwood and friends in the audience too. Those of you who may have watched/heard
Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Festival back in July will know that Derek, as well as fronting his own band, also plays in Eric’s band and on occasion’s The Allman Brothers Band. With Steve’s appearance at the said festival, he and Derek played together for Steve’s set and as part of Eric’s Band for his set. Steve was no doubt there last night not only to enjoy the superb music and band, but also I imagine to say Hi to Derek after the performance. Loving fine music as we do here at CR we highly recommend a listen to The Derek Trucks Band if you’ve not already heard them, current album entitled “Songlines”.  Their music is an eclectic mix of Rock, Blues, Soul, Jazz and World Music, but not stuck in any particular genre. Sound familiar?  Think I know someone else whose music is like that.  Yep, you guessed right!

I noticed that Dave Mason’s Website has been revamped and appears under a new URL being:  www.dave-mason.com/ . If you still have the previous “thedavemason” site bookmarked it will redirect you to the new site so that you can update your bookmark. There is also a direct link to Dave’s MySpace site which you can get to from there.  Dave’s continues to gig regularly in the US (we’d love to see him here in the UK and elsewhere too sometime) and one gig worth mentioning for those who might be within distance is an appearance on October 8th at The Ridgefield Playhouse in Ridgefield Connecticut, where he shares the bill with the legendary John Mayall of John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers fame. (Thanks Karen for the heads up on that particular show). A full schedule of Dave’s future gigs can be viewed on his TOUR page.

I just noticed that HMV.COM are quoting the Dear Mr Fantasy DVD due for release on September 17th at their online price of £8.99 with free delivery.  Check it out at

A new Edition in the Mojo “Classic” Magazine series commemorates the fact that it is the  hsol0240th anniversary of The Summer of Love for those who remember it, way back in 1967.  I do! It was a gas, man! Entitled Hendrix and The Summer of Love it features articles on many of the great’s who were making waves in that year of change and although the magazine has Hendrix to the fore, his article is just one of many inside about the likes of the scene at the time, San Francisco - The gathering of the tribes, The scene in the UK, The Beatles, Stones, Pink Floyd and all those other groovy happening bands and artists coming to prominence then. One of whom was TRAFFIC and there is an article inside about them.  Labelled as a collectors edition, in a way it is, although it’s not the first on this subject and no doubt will not be the last hopefully. Available at all good new vendors, priced at £5.99.  Recommended.  Cool, groovy, far out man!

Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival held on July 28th featuring Steve is scheduled for a DVD release on November 6th. (Source www.whereseric.com/ )

31st July 2007
Hopefully some of you were able to get to see and hear some of The Crossroads Festival Show held on Saturday July 28th in Chicago on msn.com. Unfortunately here most of it was being relayed  during the middle of the night, so the night owls (excluding me) may have caught it. But fortunately the entire show was rerun on both Sunday and Monday so I was able to catch it in its entirety and excellent it was too!  Aside obviously from Eric and Steve it’s worth mentioning great performances by The Derek Trucks Band and Jeff Beck who featured an amazing female bass player in Tal Wilkenfeld.  Jeff’s set was mind blowing. Not forgetting the other great artists that were there. For the aficionados amongst you, Steve joined Eric Clapton and his band to play ‘Pearly Queen’ and ‘Presence of the Lord’ both on organ and then played guitar on the following  ‘Can’t find my way home’, ‘Had to cry today’, ‘Dear Mr.Fantasy’ and finally ‘Cocaine/Crossroads’.  This time they seemed better rehearsed than the Highclere show and the performances were outstanding.  The MSN site has now reverted the show to a selection of highlights and you can play back “Can’t find my way home, Cocaine and Crossroads” all featuring Steve via this link music.msn.com/crossroads . Enjoy. Eddie.

27th July 2007.
Seen on the every excellent www.whereseric.com/ Eric Clapton Fans Website is news that The Crossroads Festival scheduled for Saturday 28th July which features Steve Winwood and many other musical greats will have an MSN Music Live Webcast.
Follow this link to MSN for more details music.msn.com/crossroads Thanks to Andrew E for spotting this.
If you want to check your own time against the time in Chicago, then here is a good web site that will do that for you www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/ I can tell you that Chicago time is 6 hours behind London Time.

DAVE MASON has a new live album out called DAVE MASON LIVE (DELUXE EDITION) which features as well as his usual set of classics, an additional 2 unreleased studio recordings. 40000 Headmen with Jim Capaldi and and a song called Deaf, Dumb and Blind. Here’s a link to the publicity blurb:
www.fridaymusic.com/albums/dave_mason/XM_live.html Thanks Dan for reminding us about this one.  We knew about it; it was accidentally overlooked.

And continuing with DAVE MASON, Steve Milner has let us know about this: “Mason fans disappointed with the paucity of recent  releases might find a visit to Youtube worthwhile. There are a couple of videos  of him performing 'Keep on Runnin' Through My Mind' and Jim's tune, 'How Do I Get To Heaven'. Also, a 9-part guitar tutorial with and Instrumental 'El Toro' ...and a guided tour round the RKS manufacturing facility ...and an explanation  of how to change the body on an RKS. (I still haven't figured out 'why?'  though!) And more!”

29th June 2007.
LATEST NEWS.
Spoke with John Taylor, Jim's long time manager who appears optimistic that the Dear Mr. Fantasy DVD will be released by Eagle Rock in late August/Early Sept.  I was fortunate enough to see rough takes of the soundcheck footage back in April and an interview I did  with Aninha Capaldi should see the light of day very soon. It lasted over an hour and focuses on the inception/preparation for the concert and some wonderful recollections of events in Jim's life.  It is understood that Steve's contributions to the DVD will be limited to 2 songs, namely Light Up... and Dear Mr Fantasy.

Received an e-mail from Eclectic Records who report that the long awaited release of Chris Wood's Vulcan is mooted for Nov. 2007 through Eclectic/ Cherry Red records. Hope to have more info on that a.s.a.p.

A number of people have asked when the next COLOURED RAIN MAGAZINE is due. I'm awaiting completion of various articles from various contributors, including a backstage report from the forthcoming Crossroads Festival. Also endeavouring to improve picture quality/layout which may cause a slight further delay, albeit I believe the next issue will be worth the wait.

Last of all Copyright.  May I share in a view expressed by Web-Master Eddie and in accord with my own observations too. We are somewhat “miffed” that people have been quoting or using material from this web-site without permission and even more annoyingly without crediting our site as the source. We like to give credit where credit is due for information received.  Eddie and myself work as a partnership running a web-site and paper based magazine. We put a lot of time and effort into this together with our regular contributors and we make no money from these ventures and indeed usually run at a loss. It is very much the work of some

who stoop so low. We await grovelling apologies from those guilty parties.

Not long back from Steve’s gig at The Junction in Cambridge yesterday. A full review will follow soon from myself (Eddie) together with some tremendous photographs by Paul Minkinnen. What I can tell you for the moment is that the band line up is new in comparison with the earlier shows such as Brighton. It features the return of Jose Neto, Paul  Booth on Sax/Flute and keyboards (who came back for some of the latter shows on the recent leg of the UK tour), Richard Bailey on drums and a new percussionist  in Satin Singh for Karl Van Den Bossche.  No new songs unfortunately and  the set list is the same as played at Brighton. Satin Singh comes from a Jazz background and I believe currently plays with Loz Speyers TIME ZONE which I  understand are a Cuban flavour Latin type band. Here is a photograph of satin together with Karl at a Drum Workshop back in September.

This  is at a cost of £24.99 for the full year. There is a free membership, but access is limited to the forums that they have there. A chance meeting by Steve J with one of the performers at the Dear Mr.Fantasy Tribute Concert prompted the question as to when the DVD will be released and the reply was that is believed it will be in August/September

A new 2 CD compilation entitled “The Sound of the 70s” has just hit the shops in the UK.  This edition features Jim Capaldi singing “Love Hurts”. There have been plenty of such compilations of this period issued over time, but it’s worth taking a look or listen to because it has some good stuff on it.  Who can resist that incredible bass line on Archie Bell and the Drells “Here I go again” ? And Hurricane Smith’s  anguished and troubled vocal on “Don’t let it die” where it sounds like he’s preparing to meet his maker?  But it’s just a song.

30th March 2007. Some time back (2004 in fact) we mentioned that Steve appeared with Santana at a gig then.  Well it was recorded for DVD and here are details of the release:  SANTANA - HYMNS FOR PEACE - LIVE AT MONTREAUX 2004. Due for release on 30th April 2007.
“ On 15 July 2004,  Santana took to the stage in Montreux accompanied by a stunning line-up of guests to perform a concert of songs about peace and understanding that they  dubbed "Hymns For Peace". Joining the regular Santana line-up in the band were Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Ravi  Coltrane and Idrissa Diop with further guestappearances through the night from Angelique Kidjo, Barbara Morrison, Patti Austin, Sylver Sharp, Steve Winwood and Nile Rodgers.”

22nd March 2007. FIRST REPORT ON STEVE’S GIG AT BRIGHTON CONCORDE 3. Just back from Brighton having taken in the first gig of Steve’s UK dates just a few hours ago.  The wee small hours of the morning here as I type this (I must be mad, but I’m still wide awake and while it’s fresh in my memory). Just an initial summary to start. A more detailed review with photographs will follow in due course and will be placed in our GIG REVIEWS section.

Well, we were hoping that this time we would get to hear some new material having its first airing on the road.  But we got something else that was new instead! Two new band members!  In place of Paul Booth (who we knew had a commitment in the States with a Riverdance tour) on Sax, Flute and Organ was Mike Smith.  A new name to me.  I would say that he looks like an adult Harry Potter. But instead of flying a broomstick he was really flying on Sax and Flute, and a good supporting role on Organ while Steve took on his guitar and mandolin duties.

And next was the big surprise. No Jose Neto on guitar!  Instead Tim Cansfield on guitar who has played in Steve’s touring band before, on the Junction 7 tour if I’m not mistaken.  A guy standing next to me who told me before the gig how much he was looking forward to seeing Jose again and had come wearing a Bandana? over his head in homage didn’t believe me when I told him he wasn’t playing.  I tried to get him to have a bet with me on it, but he declined. Shazbat! I would have won anyway because I saw a little of the band soundchecking before the gig Ha!.  You win some, you lose some.  Never mind! That aside, no new material, perhaps playing safe with the old material to bed in the 2 guys for this short tour. The two new guys played very well. Steve was in very fine voice and looked younger than ever.  Karl VanDen Bossche and Davide Giovannini excellent on percussion and drums respectively. That aside it was a good gig.  A small venue and a sold out gig of approximately 300 people standing. Kinda reminded me of those old days in sweatboxes like the Marquee Club in London many, many, many years ago.  Intimate venues, up close and personal. Speaking to Steve’s Sound Engineer James Towler after the gig he told me that Jose will be back in May: Tim deputising until then.

As I said earlier, more on the gig to follow in due course.  Just to mention that  it was nice to meet Suzy who had flown all the way over from Japan just to take in the first 2 gigs on this tour. Her first trip to England. Now there’s fan devotion for you!  The things we do for art huh? Eddie

26th February 2007. A glowing review of the Dear Mr.Fantasy Tribute Concert appears in the April 2007 edition of MOJO MAGAZINE received today.

20th February 2007. TRAFFIC CONCERTS ON WOLFGANGS VAULT. We may have mentioned this before, but I can’t remember. There is a web site at www.wolfgangsvault.com/ which has been in existence for some time which features concerts recorded by the Legendary Concert Promoter Bill Graham at various venues in the USA during the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Wolfgang was Bill’s real first name, and the recordings have been amassed over time prior to Bill’s death just a few years back. Hence “Wolfgang’s Vault”. The site has been releasing streaming audio content of some of the concerts recorded of which I am sure many of you know, includes a concert by TRAFFIC which on the site is dated as a performance of 18th November 1970. Now this is widely believed to have been the core with one or two exceptions of what would have been the unreleased Traffic Live November 70 album. If you register with the site (it just needs your e-mail address and a password) then you can access the many concerts that are available to be heard from there. They also provide registered members with an e-mail update as they add items to the site and their latest e-mail informs us that another recording of Traffic Live at Winterland 73 has been added. Essential listening while the concerts remain there. Go to the site, register, then access the Concert Vault for so much wonderful content.

16 February 2007. STEVE WINWOOD UK DATES. Steve will be playing some dates in March which are:

The first being Pete Townshend’s interpretation of No face, No Name, No Number and the second Joe Walsh’s interpretation of 40000 Headmen. Sound quality is very good, if the visual quality is not. Thanks for spotting to Phil G.

A review by David Sinclair from The Times Online also added.

22nd January 2007. A first review of the Dear Mr. Fantasy Tribute written by me can be read by following the highlighted link. A more detail review by Paul will follow shortly. If any of you who were present at the show last night and would like to give your thoughts on the show then please write to me at colrain@senzatempo.co.uk and perhaps as a fan’s tribute to Jim I’ll compile them and add them as a Coloured Rain Tribute to Jim together with the reviews of what was essentially a wonderful evening celebrating Jim’s life and music. Can I also add on behalf of myself and Paul how good it was to meet up with contributors and friends, both old friends and new acquaintances made last nght. Here’s to the next time! Eddie.

Just in on the same subject a newspaper review of the gig which you can read at www.thisislondon.co.uk/music/gig-23358211-details/A+Celebration+For+Jim+Capaldi%3A+Steve+Winwood%2C+Paul++Weller%2C+Pete+Townshend%2C+Joe+Walsh%2C+Gary+Moore%2C+Jon+Lord%2C+Bill+Wyman/gigReview.do?reviewId=23382346 for which thanks Baz. Some additional Spencer Davis news can be read at this link entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,23569-2547586.html Thanks to Steve Milner for this snippet of info.

10th January 2007 THE SPENCER DAVIS GROUP will be playing what is being billed as their only London show at The 100 Club in London’s Oxford Street on Saturday February 3rd.

5th January 2007. DEAR MR.FANTASY - JIM CAPALDI TRIBUTE - TIME ANNOUNCEMENT. For those of us who will be attending the concert and have received their tickets, please note that the doors to the venue open at 5pm, the concert starting at 6pm and is expected to end at 9.30pm approximately. The tickets incorrectly state that the doors open at 6pm. The Roundhouse web site correctly shows the doors opening time and The Roundhouse themselves have confirmed the timings with us. The end time at least gives those of us who will be travelling distances the opportunity to arrive home at a respectful rather than ungodly hour. We also understand that there are still some standing tickets available, so spread the word because from what we understand this is going to be a very memorable concert indeed.
